Culture and Development Assistance Research
The role of culture is an important variable in Muslim majority countries, where USAID does some of its most important work. Many Mission activities in these regions are focused on promoting gender equality, but have often fallen short of expectations because they did not fully account for cultural relativism and the dichotomy between Western women and their Muslim counterparts. USAID tasked MSI to initiate training and research efforts designed to further USAID’s understanding of how culture (especially Islam) and development assistance interact. The firm has been making significant strides since 2008 and will continue the work September 2010.
