Economic Growth & Infrastructure
MSI has been active in Economic Growth projects since its inception and has recently broadened the scope of related activities. Our current Economic Growth portfolio includes macroeconomic assessments; project monitoring, evaluation, and design; economic policy reform, public sector institution building; and entrepreneurship and other aspects of private sector development. In addition, by joining the Coffey Group, we are further expanding the breadth and depth of our expertise. Coffey International Development brings a solid background in Support to Donor Programming, Strategy and Policy Advice, Enhancing the Enabling Environment, and Financial Services Capacity Building, among others.
- Developing Country Macroeconomic and Growth Analysis. MSI has had a growing core of EG staff specializing in macroeconomics and growth applied to economic development. Our expertise in this area continues to be called upon and the scope of our staff’s involvement is being increased. We are a partner in a developing country macroeconomic analysis project, with staff doing both research and writing.
- Private Sector Development. Our expertise in private sector development contributes to a three-year USAID-funded initiative that brings together various firms with experience in this area to create a core of experts to provide advice and research to donors investing in private sector development.
- Monitoring, Evaluation, and Design. MSI applies its expertise and extensive experience in project monitoring, evaluation, design and planning to Economic Growth programs worldwide. Currently, MSI is designing and implementing M&E systems as well as designing programs and providing recommendations in areas such as trade, trade capacity building, export and investment promotion, competitiveness, business environment, workforce development, and microenterprise.
- Entrepreneurship Development. MSI is a recognized expert in this field, having created an award-winning entrepreneurship development program representing the state of the art for the identification and training of entrepreneurs. We have provided technical assistance in ten languages to participants from 55 countries, resulting in the establishment of permanent entrepreneurship development programs in 14 countries.
- Assistance to Policy Change and Reform. Over the past 12 years, we have held a number of Indefinite Quantity Contracts with USAID to provide services in the area of effecting policy, legal, and regulatory reform, including in the EG area. The primary objective has been to improve the ability of host country entities to execute functions related to effecting change. National governments, local governments, non-governmental organizations, and community-based groups are eligible for support. As appropriate, regional activities are also eligible for support. With ongoing input from host-government partners and stakeholders, MSI has provided hands-on technical assistance, training, process consulting, and facilitation in more than 16 countries, conducted applied research on policy reform and implementation issues, and developed and tested tools for policy planning and implementation across a range of topics and environments. Illustrative projects include: strategic management assistance to the Gambian Ministry of Finance and economic analysis, trade and investment policy implementation in Guinea-Bissau, and formulating an action plan to strengthen the Jamaican Ministry of Finance.
