Civil Society
MSI has pioneered a number of innovative approaches and carried out substantial activities to support civil society to enhance effectiveness, participation, and transparency. For instance, we develop the capacity of civil society and the mass media to put significant pressure on governments to implement reforms that fight corruption. This work includes coalition building, public-private partnerships, watchdog initiatives, public awareness campaigns, investigative journalism, and active advocacy programs.
Our civil society work is designed collaboratively to ensure the highest degree of local ownership – and to generate tangible, lasting benefits for local communities.
Our worldwide program focus has included:
- Increasing citizen participation in policy processes;
- Strengthening the capacity of civil society organizations;
- Removing administrative barriers, streamlining procedures, enforcing laws, and punishing corrupt officials;
- Providing support to general analytical/strategy work for civil society, monitoring and evaluation;
- Significant grant programs to mobilize civil society;
- Enhancing the advocacy and communication skills of civil society; and
- Working to increase media effectiveness and improve organizational capacity of media outlets.
